The Media Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and from 7:30 a.m. to 2:06 p.m. on Monday and Friday. The Media Center closes at such time as late buses are cancelled or students are dismissed early. Student are not allowed to bring book bags into the media center.
LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER MATERIALS – BORROWING RENEWAL (back to top)
Daily loans: old magazines, some encyclopedias, and some other reference materials
may be signed out for one class period (limit: two per student), provided that they are
not being held on reserve for another class. This material must be returned by the end of
the period.
Overnight loans: old magazines, some encyclopedias, and some other reference
materials may be signed out overnight (limit; 2 per student). Materials must remain in the
media center until 2:06 p.m. (or verified early dismissal) and must be returned on the
next school day before 7:45 a.m. bell. Other books: all books are due in two weeks (10
school days) for students in grades 7-12.
All books may be renewed, unless there is a waiting list.
Fines are not collected for overdue materials, however, persons with overdue materials are prohibited from checking out materials until the overdue materials are returned.

Damaged books will be assessed and charged to the student as follows:*
(1) Cost of replacement or rebinding which ever one is less.
Damaged paperback books will be assessed and charged to the student in direct
proportion to the actual value of the book, as determined by the Library Media
Specialist.
Lost books will be billed at the cost of replacing the books – (or, if out of print, a similar
title) less 20%.
Lost magazines will be subject to a fine of $1.00.
Lost encyclopedias will be billed at the replacement cost of approximately $25.00 each.
Charges for lost media center materials are payable immediately and will be promptly
refunded if the book or other material is returned to the media center.
*By recommendation of the Library Advisory Board (5/76), these procedures now apply
to faculty and staff using the media center, as they have for students in the past.
OTHER LIBRARY SERVICES (back to top)
Classroom Bookmobile – at the request of a subject teacher media center personnel will
place selected media center resource materials on a book truck to be used in the
classroom during a given period.
Audio Visual Material – at the request of a subject teacher to the Instructional Media
Department, students may be permitted to use audio and video cassettes and certain
other A.V. aids in the media center during a class period.
Library Media Center Orientation and Instruction – course in basic media center skills for
incoming 7th grade students is implemented by the Library Media Specialist in
cooperation with subject teachers each year. During these class sessions, which are
conducted in the media center, the media center is closed to general use by other
students. A less formalized program of instruction is also implemented on all grade
levels to individuals and groups as the need arises throughout the school year. A
variety of instructional materials purchased or prepared by the media center for this
purpose are also available to teachers for classroom use.
Inter-Library Loan – materials from other Library collections may be obtained by
individuals through the school media center as part of the Massachusetts Regional
Library System. Materials from other school Libraries may sometimes also be obtained if
requested several weeks in advance.
END OF THE YEAR SCHEDULE (back to top)
In order to complete an extensive inventory of all media center materials as well as
budgetary and clerical duties, the media center will close two days prior to the last day
of school. By this date all media center materials must be returned and all fines paid.
After this date, the media center is closed for the remainder of the school year.
HOW TO FILE COMPLAINTS ABOUT CURRICULAR/INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS (back to top)
All complaints or criticisms of any media center or curricular materials will be dealt with
by the Library Media Center Selection Policy Committee in accordance with the
procedures established in the Book Selection Policy of the Mahar Regional School
Library Media Center. Please refer to that policy for specifics.
